enigel's prompt Castiel & Aziraphale, In the Garden. Unbetaed, like all my comment!fic.
Summary: A conversation in Eden... with footnote.
To be honest, Aziraphale had never been terribly fond of his sword. It did flame nicely, and it was quite good at cutting down demons, but he’d much prefer a cup of tea – or he would if tea had been invented yet. He was going to have to wait another three millennia or so for that.
It was really very peaceful there, with all the trees and the animals living together in harmony. If one closed ones eyes it was almost like being back in heaven – albeit without the constant perfect choruses of the choirs supernal. The seraphim did like everything to be accompanied by a rousing fanfare.
“Aziraphale.” In the relative peace and quiet of Eden his name rang out like the whistle at a sports game.1
The angel standing opposite him, in the shade of a tall tree – the tree of knowledge it would later be pointed out by a certain slithering serpent, which was really going to cause some problems, was one of the younger ones… sort of. They were all the same age really, but Aziraphale had mentally divided them into older and younger and placed himself firmly in the more mature category. “It is pleasant here.”
“Yes, I quite like it,” he replied, wondering why he was being bothered. It wasn’t usual for anyone to come down really. Gabriel sometimes popped in to check that everything was going alright, and Michael liked to keep everyone on their toes. He even got the odd visit from the Metatron, which wasn’t particularly enjoyable, a bit like a surprise inspection, but the lower orders never seemed to visit. He didn’t mind so much, there were only so many conversations about faith and good harp care one could take. “Castiel, isn’t it?”
“Yes… these… humans. They are strange.”
“A little, but they’re quite harmless really,” Aziraphale gestured over through the bushes to where Adam and Eve were happily playing with leaves.
“What are they for?” Castiel asked, turning to peer off between the trees.
“I don’t think they’re for anything…” Aziraphale said with a shrug, although, to be honest, he had been asking the same question. It was all very well babysitting them, and they were really quite nice and he was enjoying the peace and quiet, but he hadn’t quite got his head around what the point of it was. But that was ineffability, he supposed. Sometimes you didn’t get to understand until the last possible moment, and even then you were never one hundred percent certain.
“Is it true that… they do not have to obey?” Castiel asked, a little confused by the very idea.
“Oh yes, that’s true,” Aziraphale assured him, aware of how alien the concept would be. “They just do what ever they want. Something about how evil and good have to exist side by side, and intention is important… I don’t understand it really.”
“No,” Castiel agreed, “it is puzzling.”
“You know how it is… the divine plan and all that,” Aziraphale agreed with a shrug. There was a cheerful giggling wafting towards them through the trees.
“Yes. The divine plan,” Castiel said with a nod. “It is infallible.”
“Of course,” Aziraphale said with a sigh. Castiel nodded. There was a brief beat of wings and Aziraphale was left alone once more. He looked up at the cheerful blue sky, which never clouded over – because clouds hadn’t been invented yet – and sighed. “Ineffable,” he murmured, and the tree tops seemed to nod their agreement.

1 Another thing he was going to wait several millennia for… but wouldn’t enjoy as much as tea, although cricket wasn’t all that bad, if you managed to forget the fact there was a game going on and just have a nice picnic.

Loved Castiel and Aziraphale contemplating and not truly understanding humanity.
Ineffable indeed. :)
