Author's Note: written for [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, [livejournal.com profile] downfall35's prompt Supernatural, Castiel/Dean, Castiel's diner makes the best damn pie there is.. This is sort of attempt number five, and I was tossing up between pos-averting-the-apocalypse the boys and Cas set up a pie shop and AU. I decided on AU. Although this might be the beginning of an entire universe.
Summary: AU - Dean's tired and hungry and goes into a diner he's never noticed before for some pie. It's the best damn pie there is.

It wasn’t the sort of place you went looking for, it was the sort of place you found when you weren’t looking for anything in particular, but you’d had a bad day, you needed to get out of the rain or you were so hungry your stomach was beginning to digest itself. The sign over the door was faded and peeling, but the tips of what might have once been the wings of a bird could just be seen in the corners. Underneath, someone with keen eyesight would just be able to make out the words Castiel’s Diner in an ancient looking script.

Dean had found it, as most people did, without really looking. He had been on his way back from work at the end of a godawful day and he had been looking for somewhere to eat when he’d caught sight of the dilapidated place hiding in between a Starbucks and a record shop. The chalkboard sign in the window informed him that they served pie and that was good enough for him. He’d ducked in through the door and it was like he had stepped into another world. As soon as the door shut behind him the noises of the traffic outside were shut out completely.

The place was almost empty, except for a man standing behind the counter and another guy sitting in the corner scribbling in a notebook and muttering to himself while a red haired waitress set down a new cup of coffee in front of him

“ - The… boneweary man hurried in through the – Thank you – door with a weary… with a relieved sigh -”

Dean crossed over to the counter and perched on one of the oversized stools there, looking over the counter at the man standing there. All he did was stare back.

“Can I get some pie?” he asked, and the man blinked, seeming to come out of his reverie.

“Certainly, Dean,” the man said, “what sort would you like?”

“How do you know my name?” he asked, sitting up, startled. The server cocked his head to one side, his brows drawing together in confusion.

“It is on your name badge,” he said. Dean looked down and stared at the badge he had forgotten to take off from his work earlier.

“Oh… yeah. Anyway – pie and a black coffee, please,” he gave one of his most charming smiles. The man nodded, turning away and leaving Dean to stare around the place.

“ – he looked around the interior with a practised eye, taking in the signs of obvious neglect… no, not neglect... taking in the signs of extensive use -”

There wasn’t much to it, a few booths by the windows, a handful of mismatched tables around the room, one of which was inhabited by the murmuring writer who was downing his coffee like a desperate man. It didn’t look like much.

“ – he looked around the interior with a practised eye, taking in the signs of obvious neglect… no, not neglect... taking in the signs of extensive use -”

“How did you find this place?” Dean jumped, turning back to the counter to find that the man had come back with his coffee and pie without making a sound.

“I… just found it,” Dean told him with a shrug. “I was hungry, it was here.”

“That is how it usually happens,” the man said with a nod. “I am Castiel.”

Dean looked at him incredulously, taking a sip of his coffee – just hot enough to scorch the inside of his mouth. “Like on the sign outside, Castiel?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t think that was someone’s name,” Dean admitted, “Dude, your parents must have had issues.”

“I do not believe so.”

“Right… okay then, so. I’ve never noticed this place before – been here long?”

“Yes and no.” Castiel’s lips might have quirked up slightly. “More yes than no.”

“That doesn’t make any sense…” Dean said.

“Everything is relative, Dean”

“So you mean – relative to the Starbucks next door you’ve been here a long time, but relative to the universe you haven’t.”

“That is a useful way of viewing it,” Castiel said with a nod, “although it is incorrect in every aspect.” Dean stared at him and shook his head before taking a spoonful of pie. Five seconds later he had forgotten what he was talking about.

His phone rang in his pocket when he was half way through the slice. He answered without pausing in eating.

“Dean?” His brother’s voice asked from the other end of the phone. “You were supposed to be back half an hour ago…” Dean cut him off with a noise of delighted pleasure. “Dean? What are you doing? I told you not to pick up the phone anymore when you were with a girl…”

“Sammy – I have found the best damn pie ever.”

“Pie?”

“Dude – best pie in the world!”

“Maybe you and the pie should get a room.”

“I would totally get a room with this pie…” Dean told him looking down at his next spoonful. “And I’d cuddle.”

“Too much information, Dean.”

“The love between man and pie is a sacred bond, Sammy. It should never be broken.” He took another bite. “I think I’m in love.”

“With pie.”

“Yes!”

“Okay, then…I’ll see you later, unless you and the pie decide to elope.”

“Yeah – later, Sam.” He clicked his phone shut and looked down at his almost empty plate. He looked up and another plate was being pushed over to him. “I think I’m in heaven.”

“No,” Castiel said solemnly. “In heaven, you wouldn’t have to pay.”

“No,” Castiel said solemnly. “In heaven, you wouldn’t have to pay.”

Ha! This was beautiful.

Like the other two said, the last line totally is made of win. And the solemness that Castiel said it. I can imagine with a small tinge of smirk.

Hah, awesome. I love how though even though it's an AU, all the voices are absolutely spot on. I love the lines they got! Castiel so straightforward-but-not and Dean with the slight puzzling and pie-love. Oh, and Chuck! Love the way you fit him in there, writing the scene!

Some favourites:

“It is on your name badge,” he said.
:)

“That is a useful way of viewing it,” Castiel said with a nod, “although it is incorrect in every aspect.”

Hahaha. Castiel with a subtle flicker of a smile and Dean, it's the other way around, lol!

“No,” Castiel said solemnly. “In heaven, you wouldn’t have to pay.”
Hee!

Very cute scenario, great fic.

Best. line. ever.

I can imagine Dean with the pie (kinda like in Harold and Kumar with the giant bag of weed).

Um...so its about a year and half a month late, but this was posted on my birthday so would you mind if I take the liberty of considering it a birthday present in my head? (If not...well, I also chalked a show I like coming back from haitus the week of my brithday and the 100th SPN episode coming out the day before my birthday as presents from the network. MY CRAZY MIND FEELS LOVED, MO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY!)

but this was really good, and I liked it :) Almost all the lines are my favorite, to I won't quote anything. I'll just run along and save to memories...
