It's very rare that people write the Merlin/Will friendship in a way I like and feel true, but this really worked. They are dorky, quirky, funny, and the situation was properly heartbreaking while still making us chuckle. You've handled it very nicely, the balance of grief, anger, fondness and slow discovery that it doesn't end here for Merlin.
I couldn't grasp Arthur here, probably because he seems to have a lot of back story and that, as a character, he's always sort of hard to get unless we are in his POV. Still, it was very nice to see how he and Merlin just sort of became used to each another through silence (or, well, music, but not chatter) and situation. The wink that there was 'something about Arthur' was one of those very nice little touch of humors scattered through the story that made it a very light read, while keeping it touching.
If one sentence was needed to summarize the story, I'd pick this one: " Merlin climbs into the driver’s seat again and pulls out onto the motorway. AC/DC is still playing, but it’s switched to Back in Black and Merlin sings along as Will attempts to play air guitar, his hands sometimes almost hitting Merlin in the face – but never quite."
It was really a nice fic, and it did make me cry a little, but also smile.
