For the purposes of this story, the youngest you could volunteer to join the Independent Army was sixteen. Therefore Will joined one year early by lying about his age. Everyone else joined up at more appropriate times. Lancelot never rose higher in rank than Corporal, not because he was incapable, but because he chose to.
The Nimueh project, as shown in the Timeline, was begun as a prison camp for Sensitive prisoners of war from the Independent forces captured by the Alliance army. It became more of an experimental project slowly over the years as the Alliance used their prisoners to explore ways of repressing or isolating the Sensitive mutations. Its entire existence was only known to those with the highest Alliance clearance. It is unsure whether or not Uther Pendragon was fully aware of its activities, although he certainly knew it existed. It was this project that led the way for the Alliance’s later experiments on his daughter, Morgana.
The exact words written on Guinevere’s final report were actually, ‘Nervous and tentative everywhere other than behind the controls. Flies like a madwoman, but somehow manages to stay in the air. Definite natural ability, but somewhat eccentric method. Thinks outside the box.’
Merlin never registered himself as a Sensitive, therefore making his entire existence illegal. He has had a few narrow escapes over the years, but those are other stories in and of themselves. He’s never had any ‘official’ training in mechanics.
Morgana does not know everything that is going to happen before it occurs, although she does see certain routes that the future could take. She knows, for example, that travelling on Avalon is an important aspect of the future, and she knows that Valiant will try to kill her from the first moment they meet. She knows about Merlin and Arthur… even though that hasn’t happened yet (*sigh* this was supposed to be Merlin/Arthur, I guess I might have to write a sequel)
Arthur is partially trained in the Alliance Military Academy (MilAcad) before the events of the story, although he never graduates because he does not return for his third year. Before that he was top of his class (obviously ^_^).
Oh, and there was another possible ending to this, which never got written, in which Will died and Arthur became Captain of Avalon... I'm still debating whether or not it ever will be written, along with multiple sequels. *sigh* this universe has had control of my brain for too long.
